Vacancy: NIWA Post–Doctoral Freshwater Ecologist

Post–Doctoral Freshwater Ecologist

Based in Hamilton, New Zealand
• Fixed-term 2 years, full-time

NIWA’s freshwater research is aimed at increasing New Zealand’s economic growth through the sustainable management and use of aquatic resources and enhancing the stewardship of freshwater ecosystems and biodiversity.

We have an exciting opportunity for a Post-Doctoral Freshwater Ecologist to contribute to NIWA’s research in the area of stream restoration. Following reconstruction of habitat in previously degraded streams there is an observed delay before restoration occurs.  This two-year, fixed-term appointment will be responsible for investigating the drivers of this restoration hysteresis and solutions to overcome the associated ‘bottlenecks’ which delay recovery. The research will determine methods to boost stream biota recovery in riparian restoration projects, in production and urban environments. The position will also contribute to other research and consulting projects in the area of freshwater ecology.

Applicants will need to have completed a PhD degree in freshwater ecology, specialising in stream invertebrates or stream restoration. The position requires an ability to work in a team environment, to be well-organised and solution-oriented.

NIWA offers competitive remuneration and benefits and free parking.
