Conference awards
NZFSS offers a range of awards and research scholarships to celebrate and foster the fantastic efforts of our members and their contributions to freshwater sciences. These include:
- the NZFSS Medal to recognize outstanding contributions to understanding and management of freshwaters by our members;
- the NZFSS Early Career Researcher Award to recognize and showcase outstanding freshwater research by scientists at the beginning of their careers; and
- the Golden Plover Wetland Research Award to support Honours or MSc students researching any aspect of wetland ecology or management.
The NZFSS Awards Committee consists of the NZFSS President or nominee (Jenny Webster-Brown), the NZFSS Treasurer or nominee (Justine Quinn), the Awards Coordinator (Katie Collins) and Brett Stansfield.
SIL 1987 Trust Fund
The Society also administers grants for student and young researcher overseas travel and visits by eminent overseas scientists through the SIL 1987 Trust Fund. These include:
- the SIL 1987 Trust Travel Awards to assist early career members to attend international conferences;
- the SIL 1987 Trust Guest Lecturer Awards to provide financial support for visits to and/or within New Zealand by eminent overseas limnologists, whose visits will benefit New Zealand’s freshwater research community as a whole;
- the SIL 1987 Trust V.H. Jolly Conference Travel Awards to assist student members to attend the annual NZFSS conference; and
- the SIL 1987 Trust Student Conference Awards which celebrate outstanding conference presentations by student members at the annual NZFSS conference.
The SIL 1987 Trust Fund is managed by the following trustees: Carolyn Burns, Kit Rutherford, Jon Harding, Neil Deans and the NZFSS Secretary/Treasurer (Justine Quinn).
Other awards and recognition
In addition to those awards and recognition associated with our annual conference and AGM, other scholarships and awards are provided by the NZFSS:
- the He Manawā ā Whenua Māori Research Scholarship to encourage Māori students to pursue a research career and develop their capability in freshwater ecology and/or kaupapa Māori research surrounding wai;
- the NZFSS Scholarship in Freshwater Research to support postgraduate research to gain a deeper understanding of any aspect of freshwater environments in Aotearoa; and
- the NZFSS Best Student Paper Award for the best student paper published in the freshwater sciences in the year preceding the conference by a New Zealand student or a student studying or working in New Zealand.
