Life in the Shallows: Revealing the wetlands of Aotearoa New Zealand
K. Denyer, M Peters (2022). Massey University Press. Pp 344.
Rich and diverse but often unloved, Aotearoa’s wetlands are the most vulnerable of our ecosystems. Only a tiny fraction of their original extent remains, and we continue to lose this vital habitat. The race is on to discover more about them while we still can. This highly illustrated and absorbing book introduces and explores the wetlands of Aotearoa through the work and experiences of our leading researchers. It also explores the deep cultural and spiritual significance they have for Māori, and the collaboration of mātauranga Māori and western science in continuing to improve our understanding of these special places.
Featuring wetlands to visit all around the country, descriptions of the rich bird, insect and plant life that can be found there, and some of the innovative ways we can protect and restore them, Life in the Shallows is a key resource for those who want to explore, understand and care for these precious places.
Partially sponsored by NZFSS, all proceeds from book sales go to the National Wetland Trust to further its wetland advocacy work. Available online here.

Guide to the Freshwater Crustacea of New Zealand
M. A Chapman, M. H. Lewis, M. J. Winterbourn
Published by New Zealand Freshwater Sciences Society and New Zealand Hydrological Society.
Guide to the freshwater Crustacea of New Zealand is a comprehensive update of the classic volume Introduction to the freshwater Crustacea of N.Z. by Chapman & Lewis (1976). In the intervening 35 years there have been many advances in the systematics of crustaceans leading in many instances to the introduction of new names, and our knowledge of freshwater crustacean biology and ecology has increased substantially.
The new book follows a similar format to its predecessor, uses some of the same text, and many of the original figures. However, most of the text and identification keys have been rewritten to accommodate advances in knowledge, and many new line draw- ings and colour images are included. Each chapter has its own set of references to help users access the relevant literature. Accounts of the Copepoda, Syncarida, and Amphipoda, in particular, contain much new material, and information on the remarkable subterranean and ‘terrestrial’ crustacean faunas is incorporated.
The book is intended to be a source of information and a guide to the identification of our inland crustacean fauna that can be used by students, teachers, research workers, and other environmental scientists.
