From source to sea – the story of the Kaituna and Waihī Estuary catchments
Sponsored by Bay of Plenty Regional Council
This field trip will be an opportunity to learn about the Kaituna and Waihī Estuary catchments, two catchments where increasing land use activity and hydrological modification has resulted in degradation of highly valued estuarine receiving environments. The trip will travel the length of the Kaituna catchment and explore collaborative efforts between BOPRC and Te Arawa ki Tai Trust to help improve ecological outcomes and enhance community values.
Departs: Rotorua Energy Events Centre at 8.30am and returns to the Events Centre and Airport approx 4pm
What to bring: Sturdy footwear. Raincoats

Lake Rotoiti, co-hosted with Te Arawa Lakes Trust
This field trip will support whakawhanaungatanga, sharing of our aspirations and ideas, and will highlight the benefits to Wai Māori through collaborative approaches – the theme of this year’s conference being - Haere I mua Whakakotahi – Moving forward as one.
Topics covered will include:
- Iwi/hapū aspirations and issues in the FW space
- Iwi led and collaborative FW pest control programmes
- Te Arawa Catfish Killas
- Aquatic Spray Programme
- Uwhi (bottom lining) of aquatic pest weed
- Cultural monitoring of FW taonga species using tau kōura mātauranga methods
- Wetland and habitat restoration for FW taonga species (wetland team and Fish Futures)
Departs: Rotorua Energy Events Centre at 8.00am and returns to the Events Centre approx 4.30pm
What to bring: Appropriate footwear, wet weather clothing and swimwear (if you wish to go in the thermal pools)

Lake Restoration & Monitoring
This field trip will be an opportunity to learn about the challenges of Lake restoration to achieve community outcomes
Topics covered will include:
- Wastewater reticulation and treatment in sensitive lake catchments
- Lake mitigation : wetland restoration; lake treatment; novel methods
- Cultural monitoring – demonstration of culturally inspired monitoring at a local awa
- Lake monitoring - buoys to benthic chambers
Departs: Rotorua Energy Events Centre at 9.00am and returns to the Events Centre and Airport approx 4pm
What to bring: Practical outdoor gear, swimming gear, raincoat
Cost: $90+GST

Mountain Biking
This field trip will take you on a tour of some of the best mountain bike trails that Rotorua has to offer, all the while learning about the state, pressures, and management actions for numerous lakes in the wider Rotorua Lakes Complex. A moderate level of fitness is required.
Departs: Rotorua CBD at 9.00am and returns to the CBD approx 1pm
What to bring: Sports clothes, sturdy footwear, raincoat
